What is bentonite?
Bentonite (Bentonite) is a type of volcanic mineral soil and very practical, which is made up of at least 85% clay. The main feature of bentonite soil is that it swells when it comes into contact with water and liquids. This substance is a combination of several different minerals. Physically, it has different granules, is odorless and white to cream in color. In nature, it has impurities such as potassium, sodium, aluminum and calcium.
Due to the presence of weak van der Waals bonds between the layers of bentonite, they easily slide on top of each other, which makes bentonite appear greasy to the touch. On the other hand, this feature causes bentonite particles to absorb and swell between seven and twenty times their volume of water in an aqueous environment. The main reason for the swelling of bentonites is the absorption of water in the surface layers due to hydration of exchangeable cations and finally the separation of network layers as a result of the repulsive force similar to osmotic pressure (this stage is called osmotic swelling). The swelling of bentonites occurs after their hydration. Bentonite activates faster in warmer water. The size of dispersed bentonite particles is 2 microns. Bentonite can absorb and dry water many times without losing its swelling property. Each gram of this compound has a large surface area of 600 to 800 square meters..
Types of bentonite
This material is divided into 2 general categories according to the type of structure and also the impurities present in it:
Sodium bentonite (sodic) : Its main impurity is sodium and it is hygroscopic and expands significantly when absorbing water. Its main application is in drilling oil and gas wells and it is also used as a natural insulator.
Calcium bentonite : It is an ion absorber in solutions and is used for deionization. Unlike the sodium type, instead of absorbing water, it can absorb fats and oils, so it is used as an industrial detergent in manufacturing industries.
Uses and applications of bentonite:
Bentonite for Dam construction – Bentonite for Dam construction
Dam construction bentonite can be used in dam waterproof walls, plastic concrete construction, etc. This bentonite can be produced with the best quality and according to the standards defined by customers.
Bentonite for Tunnel boring – Bentonite for Tunnel boring
This special type of bentonite is used for waterproofing tunnel walls and insulation and preventing the walls from collapsing.
Bentonite earthing well or active
This substance has little resistance to electric current and has thixotropic properties, so its slurry is used in the construction of earthing wells and to fill around the electrode bars.
and it is a cheap replacement for coal and salt in the grounding system
Benonite slurry in the earthing well is used as a low-resistance material in which the ground electrode is placed. Benonite fills the holes around the ground rod to lower its resistance. Benonite, due to its thixotropic properties, gels after a period of inactivity and will not be washed away. Benonite has low electrical resistance and does not dry out under normal conditions. .
Bentonite in oil well drilling
Bentonite Sodic is one of the most important components of drilling mud because it has various properties such as suspendability, good sealing and high absorption. This material covers the walls of oil wells and
gas, prevents cracks and fissures and as a result the well collapses, and also makes the drill bits greasy and removes waste materials from the well.
Bentonite for Molding – Bentonite for Molding – Premium grade
Because it has very good adhesive properties, it is used for granulation or pelletizing iron ore at a rate of 8 kg per 1 ton of iron ore. For this purpose, bentonite is mixed in wet form with iron ore concentrate and passed over a rotating circular plate.About 23% of all sodium bentonite extracted in the world is used to produce iron pellets.
Bentonite in metal casting industry Bentonite for Molding
Bentonite has many applications due to its soft, swelling and adhesive properties. Casting sand alone does not have the ability to adhere and it crumbles during or before casting. To prevent this problem, 15% of bentonite is added to the casting sand. Its sodium type has good adhesive and plastic properties and increases the resistance of sand in making casting molds. A combination of 6 to 8 percent bentonite with sand is used for this purpose.
Pet bedding
Bentonite soil is hygroscopic, which is why it is used as a bedding for cats and other domestic and domestic animals due to its softness and absorption of excrement. For similar reasons, it is also used in insecticides, waste disposal and soil stabilization.
Agricultural uses of bentonite
Its application in agriculture and the production of various fertilizers is also very extensive. The production of some types of agricultural fertilizers such as sulfur bentonite fertilizer, the production of poisons and the improvement of the physical condition of the soil are among its applications in agriculture. About 2 percent of the total production of this mineral is used to strengthen agricultural lands.
Refining and bleaching
In the production of vegetable oils as well as in the petrochemical industry, this substance is used due to its cationic and bleaching properties.
Bentonite in construction and civil engineering
Bentonite is used in construction as one of the materials in the construction of walls and mortar making and concrete lubrication. Its mortar prevents the movement of water inside the soil and covers the cracks. It is also used in sealing water pools, mixing with cement, producing plastic concrete, producing refractory stones, etc.
Bentonite animal feed
This substance is used to produce dry and compressed food for livestock and poultry. Its consumption increases milk production in cows, increases egg quality and increases sheep wool.
Other uses and applications of bentonite
About 2% of this substance is used in the food industry for soda production and the sugar industry. Also in the chemical industry, waste water treatment in paper production factories, tiles and ceramics, in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of powders and creams, as a filler and sealant in insulation and etc. it is used.
In the past, in our country, bentonite was used instead of soap. This substance, which was called Sarshui clay, was used as a cleanser and softener for skin and hair.
