Sormak’s Scope of Work in Chromite
1) Exploration and Resource Evaluation
In chromite, Sormak carries out exploration programs aimed at reducing the project’s technical and economic risks. This includes identifying promising targets, collecting and analyzing samples, assessing grade variability and the Cr/Fe ratio along the mineralized trend, and defining evaluation plans to support more accurate decisions on continued mine development.
2) Mining and Feed Preparation
Given the lens-shaped and often discontinuous nature of many chromite deposits, Sormak selects and executes mining approaches aligned with orebody geometry and geological conditions. Overburden control, ore blending management, and preventing feed quality decline are key priorities at this stage. In addition, reducing fine generation from mining through crushing is managed seriously, as it is a critical factor in improving recovery and concentrate quality.
3) Processing and Concentrate Production
Chromite processing is typically based on the density contrast between chromite and silicate gangue minerals, along with the use of magnetic separation in finishing stages. By designing flowsheets that match ore mineralogy and feed size distribution, Sormak defines the processing route to increase recovery, control impurities, and achieve the target market grade.
Sormak’s Chromite Processing Approach
1) Crushing with a Minimum-Fines Strategy
In chromite ores, parts of the gangue can be softer and more fragile, generating more fines during crushing. Fines make separation more difficult and increase processing costs. For this reason, Sormak designs crushing circuits with an emphasis on controlling fines generation and optimizing liberation, rather than simply reducing particle size.
2) Classification and Multi-Stage Gravity Separation
To improve separation efficiency, accurate classification and staged use of gravity-separation equipment are applied. Coarse and intermediate fractions are treated through appropriate gravity routes, and cleaning stages are used to upgrade concentrate to the required specification. Where valuable fines exist and are economically justified, dedicated solutions are considered to recover the fine fraction.
3) Magnetic Separation in Finishing Stages
To improve purity and control impurities, magnetic separation is employed as a finishing step to upgrade the final product quality in line with target market requirements.
Product Grades and Target Markets
Chromite concentrate can be supplied in different grades depending on the end-use industry. Sormak targets production and supply based on customer needs across metallurgical, refractory, chemical, and foundry applications. Key parameters such as Cr₂O₃, Cr/Fe ratio, SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ levels, and product sizing are controlled and adjusted according to relevant standards and market specifications.
